Rookie Standout and Veteran Leaders Propel Grizzlies Women's Basketball to OCAA Recognition
BARRIE, ON -- The Georgian Grizzlies women’s basketball program has been recognized for an outstanding season, earning four major Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) awards.
Leading the list of honorees is Sydney Shawyer (Horseshoe Valley, ON), who has been named to the East Division All-Rookie Team, awarded East Division Rookie of the Year, and further distinguished as the OCAA Rookie of the Year. Shawyer made an immediate impact in her first season, averaging 12.7 points per game, shooting 39.3% from three-point range, and contributing 4.9 rebounds per game. Her scoring ability and all-around play helped propel the Grizzlies forward throughout the season.
Also receiving top honors, Ami May (Raymond, AB) has been named an OCAA East Division First Team All-Star. May has been a key figure for the Grizzlies, averaging 12.6 points per game, leading the team with 6.4 rebounds per game, and ranking sixth in the conference in assists with 4.1 per game. Her leadership and consistency were instrumental in the team’s success.
Kory Hook (Barrie, ON) earned a place on the OCAA East Division Second Team All-Star list after delivering a strong season. Hook played a pivotal role in the Grizzlies’ backcourt, averaging 11.5 points per game, shooting 31.3% from beyond the arc, and providing 2.5 assists per game. She also showcased her defensive presence, ranking sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3) and second in the conference in blocked shots (15).
Rounding out the team’s award winners, Daija Thompson (Whitby, ON) has been named the OCAA East Division Sixth Woman of the Year. Thompson’s impact off the bench was undeniable, averaging 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 44.8% from the field. Her energy and versatility made her an invaluable asset to the Grizzlies’ rotation.
