Grizzlies Fall to Humber, But Community and Graduates Take Center Stage
BARRIE, ON -- The Georgian Grizzlies took on the Humber Hawks in a rematch of the 2023 OCAA Men’s Rugby gold medal game. While the Grizzlies fell short in this contest, the day was about much more than the result on the field—it was a celebration of the team’s graduating athletes and the strong rugby community surrounding the program.
Seven senior Grizzlies suited up for their final regular season home game: Paul Amos-Amao (Nigeria), Jonah Hall (Barrie, ON), Seumas Hotson (Fergus, ON), Rielly Kirk (Wasaga Beach, ON), Tad Muendesi (Zimbabwe), Kade Rennie (Collingwood, ON) and Aidan Scott (Aurora, ON). These athletes have poured their hearts into the program, helping shape the identity of Grizzlies rugby. Their leadership, commitment, and passion for the game will be sorely missed as they close this chapter of their athletic careers. The Georgian rugby community, coaches, and fans offer their deepest gratitude to these players for everything they’ve done for the team.
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, two local clubs—Barrie RFC and Georgian Bay Titans RFC—joined the Grizzlies in the stands, bringing their energy and youthfulness to the day. Young athletes from these clubs stood alongside the Grizzlies and Hawks players during the national anthem, showcasing the strong connection between local and collegiate rugby. The young athletes had a chance to announce try-scorers throughout the game, and at halftime, they took part in an obstacle course, showing off their agility and tackling skills to an excited crowd.
Both club presidents received special recognition, including a game ball, as a tribute to their contributions to the sport and their support of rugby in the community.
Next up, the Grizzlies will travel to face the Conestoga Condors on Saturday, October 19, with the chance to host a semifinal home game in the OCAA Men’s Rugby playoffs on the line.
