HAYNES, GRAY, ROMERO AND MITTON EARN MEN’S VOLLEYBALL AWARDS
Darien Haynes, Liam Gray, Jordi Romero and Bowen Mitton won OCAA men's volleyball awards at the Championship banquet on Wednesday.
The Georgian Grizzlies men's volleyball team was recognized with several awards winners at the start of the 2019 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship hosted by Humber College in Etobicoke, ON.
The awards ceremony took place at the Championship Banquet which took place Wednesday night to kick off the tournament festivities.
The entire Grizzlies team was presented with the OCAA east division championship after winning their division for the third straight year as they finished the regular season with a 16-2 record.
Darien Haynes was named an OCAA east division first team all-star while Liam Gray and Jordi Romero were named OCAA east division second team all-stars. Teammate Bowen Mitton was named to the OCAA all-rookie team.
Haynes, had yet another terrific season for the Grizzlies. The Barrie native finished tied for the team lead in points averaging 3.3-per-set and was second on the team in kills with 123.
The fifth year veteran also led the entire OCAA in blocks with 60. In his final season at Georgian he set the all-time OCAA record for career blocks, finishing with 268. This is the fourth straight season Haynes has been named an OCAA east division first team all-star and will finish his collegiate career as Georgian's all-time leading scorer.
Gray, continued to set records in a Grizzlies uniform this season. The fourth year veteran completed the trifecta of league ace records.
First he set the OCAA single-game record for aces with 15. He followed that by setting the all-time career record for aces and finished the season with 195. He then ended the regular season by setting the all-time single-season record for aces, finishing with 80 shattering the previous mark of 65 set eleven years prior.
The Barrie native also finished third overall in the OCAA in assists with 576 and finished fourth on the Grizzlies in scoring with 139 points on the season. Gray has been either a first or second team all-star in all four of his seasons at Georgian.
Romero, had another strong season for Georgian. The third year player finished tied for third on his team averaging 2.5-points-per-set while also setting career highs in assists, digs and blocks. This is the Brampton native's first OCAA all-star selection.
Mitton, made a huge impact in his first season with Georgian and was named to the OCAA all-rookie team.
The native of Australia finished third on the Grizzlies in scoring with 145 points, was third in kills with 112, third in aces with 25, and fifth in digs with 51.
The Grizzlies open the 2019 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship on Thursday night when they take on the Niagara Knights in the quarter-finals at 8 p.m.
