GRIZZLIES DEFEAT HUMBER ADVANCE TO THE OCAA SEMI-FINALS
The Grizzlies rallied to win three straight sets and defeat the Humber Hawks 3-1 on the opening day of the 2017 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship
The Georgian Grizzlies men's volleyball team opened their 2017 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect against the Humber Hawks on Thursday night at Mohawk College in Hamilton, ON.
Playing in their first provincial championship since 2014, the Grizzlies started off a bit slow dropping the first set to the Hawks.
Georgian, who were the only undefeated team in the OCAA during the regular season showed why rallying back to take three straight sets to win the match 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-23).
Darien Haynes (Barrie) led the way with 11 kills and four stuff blocks while teammate Adam Bielby (Barrie) had 10 kills.
Named a CCAA All-Canadian earlier in the day, Liam Gray was impressive with 40 assists and 16 digs in the win.
Matt Kerr (Wingham) was named player of the game for the Grizzlies.
The win advances the Grizzlies into the semi-final matchup on Friday night at 8 p.m. and will face the Mohawk Mountaineers who defeated Sheridan 3-0 on Thursday night.
Georgian's victory also guarantees that they will be playing for an OCAA medal on Saturday. The Grizzlies have never won a medal at the OCAA Championship.
