GEORGIAN RUGBY GETS SET TO PLAY IN SEMI-FINALS SATURDAY
The Grizzlies will host the St. Lawrence Vikings in the OCAA semi-finals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at J.C. Massie Field in Barrie.
The Georgian Grizzlies men's rugby team is set to head to the playoffs in hopes of repeating as OCAA Champions, a goal they accomplished last season.
After running the table in the regular season for the second straight year, another similarity awaits Georgian in the OCAA semi-final match, the St. Lawrence Vikings.
Last year the Grizzlies and Vikings played a highly entertaining, intense matchup that came right down to the wire with Georgian pulling it out in the end 26-17.
They will play the rematch this Saturday, Nov. 4 exactly one day less than a year ago from their last meeting at the same location.
The Vikings had a strong regular season going 5-1 finishing in second place in the OCAA east division. They then began their playoffs last weekend with an impressive 41-10 victory over the Seneca Sting at home in Kingston.
For the Grizzlies, they enjoyed a direct bye to the semi-finals after finishing first in the OCAA west division with a 6-0 record.
Nobody scored more points (414) or allowed fewer points (45) than Georgian did this season as they finished as the league's only undefeated team. In total the Grizzlies have won 15 straight regular season games dating back to Oct. 1, 2015.
The Grizzlies are deep on talent and have had big seasons from a number of players including Nana Ntim (Bradford), Kirk Addai Sarfo (Bradford) and Henry Do (Brampton).
The team also still features last year's OCAA men's rugby player of the year Lucas Cunningham (Bradford), last year's west division scoring champion Edwin Addai Sarfo (Bradford) and 2016 OCAA rookie of the year Jake Boulding (Barrie) all of who have been strong once again.
New additions to this year's team include Jayden Norcross (Beeton), Donovan Jacko (Brampton), Jordan Carppi (Lindsay) and James Hulbert (Aurora) who have made immediate impacts.
Game time for Saturday's game has been set for 2 p.m. at J.C. Massie Field on the Barrie campus of Georgian College. Tickets are available at the door for $5. Students can pick up tickets in advance for FREE at the Athletic Centre front desk starting now.
