Dilley and Robb-Kennedy Named Athletes of the Year
54th Annual Georgian Grizzlies Varsity Awards
Barrie, ON -- The Georgian Grizzlies hosted the 54th annual Varsity Awards on Thursday evening. The night served as a celebration of athletic and academic success over the 2023-24 season as athlete competed provincially in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and nationally in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
James Robb-Kennedy of the Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team and Bryden Dilley of the golf team took home top honours as Athletes of the Year.
Robb-Kennedy was the OCAA Championship MVP, leading his team to a 22-10 gold medal victory. The third-year flanker was named an OCAA League All-Star for his outstanding play during the regular season, leading the Grizzlies in tackles and pound for pound the best defender in the OCAA.
Dilley distinguished herself at the 2023 OCAA Championships, clinching a silver medal and securing her spot at the CCAA Golf Championship where she played a pivotal role representing Georgian on the OCAA team that took home a silver medal.
The McKillican Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Georgian Athletic Department went to Brendan Hornick for his work with the athletic department. Kory Hook from the women’s basketball team received the Howard Belcourt Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship, Dedication, Commitment, Attitude and Leadership. Hook, a Barrie native, leads by example on and off the court.
Other major award winners included men’s volleyball student-athlete Tyrell Belgrove and women’s basketball hooper Ami May who were named the male and female rookie of the year. Belgrove was the OCAA East Division Rookie of the Year and the OCAA Rookie of the Year and named to the OCAA East Division All-Rookie Team, while May was named OCAA East Division First Team All-Star and OCAA East Division All-Rookie Team.
Janella Viado won the Female Academic & Athletic Excellence Award for her performance on the hardwood and in the classroom. Golfer, Gavin Prosser won the Male Academic & Athletic Excellence Award for outstanding work in the classroom while helping his team through the OCAA Championship.
A total of 34 student-athletes received an OCAA All-Academic Award for achieving an average of at least 80% or higher while also representing Georgian in their respective sport. In addition, five student-athletes received recognition from the OCAA and CCAA as achieving all-star status and academic success. James Robb-Kennedy of the mne’s rugby team was awarded the OCAA Academic and Athletic Excellence Award, while Kenny Ang, Bryden Dilley, Ethan Eiselt-Rolfe, Ami May and Janella Viado were named CCAA Academic All-Canadians.
