HAYNES SETS OCAA BLOCKS RECORD, HITS 1,000TH POINT IN GRIZZLIES WIN
Georgian's fifth year veteran set a new record for career OCAA blocks leading the Grizzlies to a 3-1 win over Durham.
The Georgian Grizzlies men's volleyball team travelled to take on the Durham Lords on Thursday night in Oshawa, ON.
It was a banner night for Georgian's Darien Haynes.
Haynes, a fifth year Grizzlies veteran, had a season-high 26 point performance which included 15 kills, 10 blocks and one ace.
The Barrie native entered the game only needing two blocks to set a new OCAA record for career blocks and he passed Fleming College's Clay Couchman's mark of 251 early in the first set of the game. Haynes now sits with 260 career blocks.
He also became the first Grizzlies men's volleyball player to hit 1,000 career points all in a Georgian uniform as he know sits with 1,025 points.
Haynes led the way for the Grizzlies as they were able to rebound after dropping the first set to win three straight to defeat the Lords 3-1 by set scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23.
The Grizzlies moved to a 12-2 record on the season and they continue to sit in first place in the OCAA east division standings, two wins up on the La Cite Coyotes.
It's been a record setting season for Georgian. Setter Liam Gray has already broken two OCAA records this season, most career aces (176) and the single game record for aces (15). With another three aces in Thursday's game, Gray is now just four aces behind matching the record for most aces in a single season with 65. The Barrie native is also second in the OCAA in assists with 435 on the season.
Erich Perau continues his fine year. After getting his 1,000 career point earlier this season, the fifth year OCAA veteran now has 938 career kills which puts him third all-time in OCAA history and his 1,063 career points put him just 12 points back of entering the top five in OCAA history for points scored.
The Peterborough native spent his first four years of his playing career at Fleming College before joining Georgian this season.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Georgian has their eyes set on setting more records including going for their third straight OCAA east division title.
Up next for the Grizzlies will be their final two home games of the regular season which take place next weekend.
First up will be the Algonquin Thunder on Friday, Feb. 1 with the women's game at 6 p.m. followed by the men's at 8 p.m.
They will then follow that up with a game on Saturday, Feb. 2 against the La Cite Coyotes with the women's game at 1 p.m. followed by the men's at 3 p.m. With it being the final home game, there will be a special ceremony prior to the games recognizing the graduating student-athletes.
