MEN’S RUGBY OPEN SEASON WITH BIG VICTORY
Mark Rodman led the way for the Grizzlies with an impressive performance as Georgian defeated Conestoga 69-0 on Sunday.
The Georgian Grizzlies men's rugby team had a great start to their 2018 OCAA regular season defeating the Conestoga Condors in impressive fashion on Sunday afternoon in Cambridge, ON.
The Grizzlies were able to pull ahead early and never look back leading to a 69-0 victory.
Third year veteran Mark Rodman (Minesing) had a tremendous game leading the charge for the Grizzlies. The fullback was key on both sides of the ball and helped put the Grizzlies in a position to score.
Last year's OCAA rookie of the year Ryan Connolly (Barrie) also had a strong game scoring two tries while also kicking seven converts. Newcomer Tennyson Brown (Everett) had two tries in his debut.
The team's other tries were scored by Alex Butt (Mississauga), William Corcoran (Dundalk), Braidon Foster (Barrie), Everett Pidgen (Brooklin), Jeremy Seng (Keswick), Jayden Wheeler (Keswick), and Liam Wilson (Orillia).
The Grizzlies are now 1-0 on the season and are currently one of three teams in the OCAA west division standings to open with a win in their first game.
Georgian is looking for their fourth straight medal this season after winning the OCAA bronze medal last year.
The Grizzlies will have a quick turnaround, returning to action this Friday, Sept. 21 when they travel to take on the Seneca Sting. The Sting (1-0) are also coming off a shutout victory, as they defeated Mohawk 58-0 this past weekend.
Georgian will play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 29 when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 1 p.m. at J.C. Massie Field on the Georgian College Barrie campus.
Tickets to the game will be available at the doors for $5 and the game will be streamed at youtube.com/GeorgianGrizzlies.
