Georgian Grizzlies celebrate season’s end with 46th Annual Athletic Awards
The Georgian College Athletic Department celebrated a year of remarkable achievement from its student-athletes at the 46th annual varsity awards banquet on Thursday, April 7 at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie.
The Georgian College Athletic Department celebrated a year of remarkable achievement from its student-athletes at the 46th annual varsity awards banquet on Thursday, April 7 at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie. The event brought together nearly 200 athletes from the thirteen men's and women's varsity programs the Georgian Grizzlies compete in annually in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
Georgian's top athletes not only excelled across the province of Ontario but were recognized among the best collegiate athletes across the country.
Men's Volleyball's Darien Haynes earned the Cloutier Cup as Georgian's Male Athlete of the Year after leading the Grizzlies team to an impressive 14-6 campaign. The Grizzlies finished the OCAA regular season fifth in the Eastern Division and earned a spot in a Provincial Crossover game. A fierce competitor, Haynes excelled at the Middle position, leading the Grizzlies in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and total points. The Barrie native ranked first in the OCAA with a .397 hitting percentage and checked in second with sixty-three blocks. He was named a CCAA All-Academic and an OCAA First-Team All-Star.
Emilie Tyndall capped off her remarkable first year as a Grizzly by being named Female Athlete of the Year and was awarded the Greer Trophy. The Golf Management student led the Grizzlies to a truly incredible season, capped off by a National Bronze Medal with the Women's Team. Tyndall's accolades include being named a CCAA All-Canadian, a CCAA Academic All-Canadian and to the All-Ontario Team. She won the Provincial Championship with the Women's team at Niagara, and came in second to grab the OCAA Silver Individually. Over the course of the OCAA season, she had seven of an eight possible top-three finishes.
Twenty-nine athletes received an OCAA All-Academic Award for achieving an average of at least 80% or higher while also representing Georgian in their respective sport. Women's indoor soccer and basketball player Jenn Stevenson and men's volleyball player Bruce Nguyen were awarded the Academic & Athletic Excellence Award for their accomplishments both in their sport and in the classroom.
Other major award winners on the night included men's volleyball player Liam Gray (Barrie) and women's volleyball player Kristen deHaan (Toronto), who were named the male and female rookies of the year. Jay Harris was presented the McKillican Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Georgian Athletic Department and men's rugby's Devon Fischer was presented the Howard Belcourt Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship, Dedication, Commitment, Attitude and Leadership.
